How to play
UnderPar is our weekly fantasy football game, and we also make four daily puzzles. Here are the full rules for each one.
UnderPar
UnderPar is fantasy football scored like golf. Pick 11 Premier League players each Gameweek, try to beat their PARs, and the lowest score wins.
Picking your XI
- Pick any 11 players. There's no budget and no bench, and you can pick a completely new team every week.
- You need exactly 1 goalkeeper, at least 3 defenders, at least 3 midfielders and no more than 3 attackers.
- Your players must come from at least 6 different clubs. One club can supply 3 players, and every other club is capped at 2.
- You can change your team as often as you like until the deadline, which is 90 minutes before the Gameweek's first kick-off. The XI you've saved at the deadline is your entry.
What PAR means
Every player has a PAR: the FotMob match rating we expect him to get in that fixture. Stronger players and easier fixtures carry a tougher PAR. The next Gameweek opens as soon as the current one locks, with draft PARs, so you can pick straight away. Once the current Gameweek is finished we update those PARs from the latest performances, and if any of your players' PARs change we tell you on your team page. From then on PARs are final.
Scoring
Each player scores his PAR minus his final FotMob rating, so beating his PAR gives a negative score. Your Gameweek score is the total of your 11 players. Lowest wins.
| PAR | Rating | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 7.9 | 8.5 | −0.6 |
| 7.2 | 7.2 | 0.0 |
| 7.5 | 6.8 | +0.7 |
- A player who doesn't play, or plays without getting a FotMob rating, scores +0.3.
- If a match is postponed, its players score 0.0.
Picking well
The best picks aren't always the best players. A star with a PAR of 8.0 has to be brilliant just to break even. A solid defender with a PAR of 6.6 against a team that rarely scores can easily go under. Look for players whose week looks better than their PAR suggests.
Private leagues
- Join a friend's league with its code, or start up to 3 leagues of your own. Each league gets its own code to share.
- Everyone in a league sees the table, with each team's Gameweek score and season total. The lowest season total leads.
- Other teams' XIs stay hidden until the deadline. After that, anyone in the league can tap a team to see it.
- A Gameweek you miss counts as +3.3 in your season total, the same as 11 players who didn't play.
Career Path
A new footballer every day. Name every club in his senior career, then guess how many league goals he scored at each one.
- His career is shown one spell at a time, in order. You get the years, and a Loan sticker if it was a loan.
- Name the club first. Get it right and his shirt changes into that club's kit.
- Every club guess counts as 1, and you get 5 tries. Miss all five and the club appears automatically, counting as 6. The Reveal button does the same at any time.
- Then you get one guess at his league goals for that spell. Exact counts as 1, 1–3 off is 2, 4–6 off is 3, 7–10 off is 4, and anything further is 6.
- Aim for the lowest total you can.
League Ladder
Name the club from ten seasons of final league positions, from 2016–17 to 2025–26.
- Positions are shown one season at a time, starting in 2016–17. Every club spent all ten seasons in the top four divisions, from the Premier League to League Two.
- Guess whenever you like. You start on 10 points, and each extra season you look at costs 1.
- A wrong guess shows the next season too, so it also costs 1. Miss with all ten seasons showing and you score 0.
- Aim for 10 out of 10.
Scorelines
Name the club from its real results in one Premier League season, from 2016–17 to 2025–26. The club is hidden as ???.
- Pick your mode before your first guess. Easy shows 5 results, Normal shows 3 and Hard shows just 1.
- You get 5 guesses at the club, picked from the list. Fewer guesses is better.
- When it's over, the club is revealed on the results you played with.
Surnames
Three footballers to find every day: one with a 6-letter surname, one with 7 letters and one with 8. They can be from anywhere in the world, past or present.
- Type any guess with the right number of letters and press Enter. It doesn't have to be a real name, so you can use guesses to test letters.
- Green means the letter is in the right spot. Gold means it's in the name but somewhere else. Grey means it isn't in the name.
- Accents are dropped, and names like Van Dijk are written as one word: VANDIJK.
- You get 6 guesses for each name.
When new puzzles arrive
All four daily puzzles change at midnight UK time. Each game keeps the last ten days, so you can catch up on any you missed. UnderPar has a new Gameweek whenever the Premier League does. It opens for picks as soon as the previous Gameweek locks.
